Emergency commercial excavation had to be carried out for a housing developer in Brecknock Road, Tufnell Park, Islington North London in a Victorian block of 16 flats. The drain system leading out to the sewer had completely dropped and was full of stone and rubble. After several hours of high pressure jetting to remove all the stone and rubble from the drain, it became apparent that our engineers had to carry out an emergency excavation at the front of the property, with minimal space, to insert an inspection chamber somewhat 5metres deep.
Pictures showing the beginning of the excavation, these pictures clearly show the amount of the space between the property and the road that we had to operate a 5 ton digging machine, to remove all the surrounding earth, to allow us to put in a hydraulic safety box

This was a very expensive excavation due to the fact we were on a main road. The Building Control Officer ‘Mr Wallace’ from Islington council had recommended us to carry out the emergency works and we had to have roll on roll off skips to allow the excavation earth to be taken out and immediately removed as the job progressed.
Allowing the safety box to be put in place, engineers were able to completely cleanse the drain using high pressure jetting. A digital camera CCTV survey was carried out and a re-line using felt and resin liners, thus giving the drain system a 10 year guarantee. We also put in place a Milton ring inspection chamber to be able to carry out further works down stream towards the main sewer.
